In discus, what is the average distance for a 16 year old high school student to throw?

I have a friend who is doing discus. Everytime I congratulate him, he tries to convince me that he did a “horrible job.” I will admit that his second score wasn’t too great, but I think he did a pretty good job. So, what would be average for a 16 year old high school student to throw?

At 16, I’m guessing we mean a freshman. An “average” freshman would throw in the 95 to 105 range. Good would be anything over 105 to about 120. Very Good would be 120 to 135. Excellent would be 135 to 145. Any freshman throwing over 145 is a prodigy, in line to be a dominant thrower (with work and good coaching) by their senior year.

But really, it should be about challenging yourself. Every time your friend makes a positive step he should see that HE achieved it. And when you challenge yourself and see that with hard work you can improve it teaches you something about yourself. And when things don’t quite work out like you hoped, you can spend your energy beating yourself up or use it to try and improve. Bottom line is that if this is making you miserable, why do it? I tell my throwers, “Hey, you’re here throwing things! If you can’t have fun doing that, then why are you here? This isn’t something you have to do, it’s something you GET to do!” Good luck!
