George Carlin says “dumber than a second coat of paint” Trying to understand this. Logically, isn’t it smart and normal to paint 2-3 coats?

It has nothing to do with painting. It is a metaphor. The second coat of paint simply follows along, and does exactly the same thing the first coat does, without anything new. It is like a person that simply agrees with someone else, without thinking for themselves.

George Carlin is a genius. In the giant scheme of life, how important could a second coat of paint be?
