If you are a god amongst insects, it means you are the biggest or most powerful one; however, insects are small, so to be their “god” wouldn’t require much power or stature. It’s definitely NOT a compliment.
The God that holds you over the Pit of Hell,
much as one holds a Spider, or some loathsome Insect,
over the Fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully
provoked; his Wrath towards you burns like Fire;
he looks upon you as worthy of nothing else, but
to be cast into the Fire; he is of purer Eyes than to
bear to have you in his Sight; you are ten thousand
Times so abominable in his Eyes as the most hateful
venomous Serpent is in ours.
–Jonathan Edwards, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” sermon, 1741.
So…yes; though, admittedly with a heaping side of hubris(/blasphemy) and a garnish of fundamentalist crazy…

It’s actually sort of an insult. To say you are god of the Universe is a compliment, meaning “You rule everything!! ” To narrow it down to just the tiniest beings on one planet is saying you’re not worthy to rule anything else.
I’m a god among idiots myself.

Personally I think it means that you are powerful, strong, significant, mighty, and in comparison, everyone around you are insects. I heard it in X-Men, I can only assume you did too. Seeing as how Magneto meant these words as a way of lifting Pyro up after he talks not-so-confidently of his powers, (“I can only manipulate the fire; I can t create it.”), that s the meaning I took from it.
Yes its a compliment. It means that if you were compared to everyone else around you, you are much, much better than the rest. It means that you are absolutely amazing, and everyone else ꜱᴜcκs
I never heard that one!
