I received a letter in the mail saying that “you are summoned as a telephone standby juror for all courts in Queens County [NY]. Begin calling …after 5 pm on April 1rst”.
It means that you’ll be in the jury pool one day between April 4 and April 8. Starting that Friday evening, you need to call that number to find out whether you need to go in on the next day of operations. When you call, you will get a recorded message giving a range of juror numbers that need to go in (e.g. Jurors 001-259 are to report on Monday the 4th)
You should have been given a juror number in the letter to identify you.
When you go in, there will be a short orientation video shown, and then you’ll just wait until your name is called, which could be right away, or even 6 or 7 hours. I recommend bringing a book or something to do.
You will probably be called into an actual courtroom eventually with about 40 other jurors, where you will be told details of the case, and the attorneys for both sides will ask you questions to determine whether they think you can be fair. After this, you’ll be told whether you’ll actually be on the jury, which will involve coming back on another day for the actual trial.
I’d guess it’s about 80% likely you’ll need to go in on at least one of those days. If your number is close to 1 you’ll almost certainly be called for Monday.

I had a very high number in the standby jury pool (870); they never even came close. I think the highest number called by the court was 725 for that week. So, I never had to go to court.
