I received a letter in the mail saying that “you are summoned as a telephone standby juror for all courts in Queens County [NY]. Begin calling …after 5 pm on April 1rst”.
It means that you’ll be in the jury pool one day between April 4 and April 8. Starting that Friday evening, you need to call that number to find out whether you need to go in on the next day of operations. When you call, you will get a recorded message giving a range of juror numbers that need to go in (e.g. Jurors 001-259 are to report on Monday the 4th)
You should have been given a juror number in the letter to identify you.
When you go in, there will be a short orientation video shown, and then you’ll just wait until your name is called, which could be right away, or even 6 or 7 hours. I recommend bringing a book or something to do.
You will probably be called into an actual courtroom eventually with about 40 other jurors, where you will be told details of the case, and the attorneys for both sides will ask you questions to determine whether they think you can be fair. After this, you’ll be told whether you’ll actually be on the jury, which will involve coming back on another day for the actual trial.
I’d guess it’s about 80% likely you’ll need to go in on at least one of those days. If your number is close to 1 you’ll almost certainly be called for Monday.

I received a letter in the mail saying that “you are summoned as a telephone standby juror for all courts in Queens County [NY]. Begin calling …after 5 pm on April 1rst”.
What does standby juror mean? And how likely is it that I will actually have to go to court?

Ny Juror
I had a very high number in the standby jury pool (870); they never even came close. I think the highest number called by the court was 725 for that week. So, I never had to go to court.
Source(s): Lived in New York; called for state jury duty three times. Federal jury duty once.

In the US, you are required by law to serve as a juror in a civil trial if you are available and able to serve. If you’re selected for jury duty, but can’t serve because you’re out of town on vacation or sick, you have the right to request that a telephone standby juror be appointed in your place.
What is a Telephone Standby Juror?
A Telephone Standby Juror is someone who is called to serve as a juror in a case, but does not have to attend the actual trial. Instead, they are available to answer any questions that may come up during the trial, and can also be reach by phone if necessary. This system is designed to ensure that each juror has access to timely information about the case, so that they can make an informed decision when it comes to their vote.
How is a Telephone Standby Juror Selected?
In most cases, a telephone standby juror is chosen randomly from a pool of people who have registered with the court. The court will contact these people and ask if they would like to be contacted about serving on a jury. If someone does not respond, the court will remove them from the jury rotation.
Once a juror has been selected, they will need to fill out an information form which will include their name, address, telephone number, and email address. The juror will also need to indicate if they are able to serve on a weekend or during evenings or night hours. Once all of this information is collected, the court will send out a questionnaire which the juror will need to complete.
Some things that the questionnaire may ask include: whether the juror has any experience with trials; what kind of work they do during their day-to-day life; if they have any issues travelling; and if they have any allergies that may affect their ability to serve as a juror.
If the juror responds to all of the questions satisfactorily, they will then be asked to schedule an interview with the court. During this interview, the court will ask questions about their background and

The duties of a standby juror vary depending on the location where the trial is taking place, but typically include reviewing evidence and jury instructions before the trial begins, and being available to answer any questions that may be asked during the trial.
Standby jurors are important for two reasons. First, they help ensure that all jurors are fully informed about the case and able to make an informed decision. How Does the Court Use a Telephone Standby Juror?
In the United States, telephone standby jurors are a common way for courts to be able to proceed with their trials. The use of telephone standby jurors is not a new concept, but it has become more prevalent in recent years as technology has changed.
The use of telephone standby jurors is an efficient way for courts to be able to proceed with their trials. By using this method, courts are able to get jury panels quickly and without having to wait for people who live close by to come in for jury duty.
The use of telephone standby jurors is also beneficial for defendants. Telephone standby jurors are typically more likely to be sympathetic towards defendants than regular jurors, which can reduce the amount of time that defendants spend on trial. Additionally, telephone standby jurors are less likely to have any biases or preconceptions about the case that they are being called to decide.
Telephone standby jurors can also be a valuable tool for judges. By using this method, judges are able to avoid having to assign specific jurors to certain cases. This can save the court time and resources, and it can also help ensure that all cases are given equal attention.
Conclusion
If you live in New York City and happen to be a telephone standby juror, now might be the time to start preparing for your potential call. Thanks to recent reforms put in place by the New York State Supreme Court, all jurors who are called for service will now have to answer their phones. This means that if you are a telephone standby juror, it is important that you have both a landline and cell phone so that you can receive calls from the court. If you do not have either of these items, please contact the court so that arrangements can be made for you to obtain them.
