I recall the episode and the book. The final page was missing. It drives everyone crazy until βJ phones the author and asks who the murderer was. βJ gets the answer (I can’t remember who it was), but Potter debunks it by proving the character couldn’t possibly have done it. There was no answer at the episode’s end.

There was indeed a final reveal at the end… by his own admission the killer was none other than the honored kaptain Benjamin Pierce who also killed three pigs and a nightingale cause they were gonne squell and sing respectively… The dastardly kaptain Pierce was never caught as he had aperently fled the country and taken up residence somewhere outside seul where he reputedly continued his bloody knife work
Avery Upᴅʏκᴇ, the evil stepson, but, he couldn’t have done it, he was locked in the supply closet at the time of the murder. I just watched the episode.

no one honestly knows. the author said it was the reverend, but she was 93 yrs. old and probably senile or forgetful. Capt. Pierce (alan alda s character) said he did it but that was only in jest. So no one will probably never know but it did make for a very funny M*A*S*H episode.
