What is 5 brake horsepower?

I want to buy a moter scooter but the dmv says it has to have 5 brake horsepower to go on the freeway it goes like 90 what does 5 brake hrosepower mean?

The first answers is correct in terms of what brake horsepower is. FYI – many lawnmowers have engines with 5 bhp. I’m not even talking about riding lawn mowers, just the regular push kind… so it isn’t much.

5 Brake Horsepower

Brake horsepower (bhp) is the measure of an engine’s horsepower without the loss in power caused by the gearbox, generator, differential, water pump, and other auxiliary components. Thus the prefix “brake” refers to where the power is measured: at the engine’s output shaft, as on an engine dynamometer. The actual horsepower delivered to the driving wheels is less. An engine would have to be retested to obtain a rating in another system. The term “brake” refers to the original use of a band brake to measure torque during the test (which is multiplied by the engine RPM and a scaling constant to give horsepower).

To keep up with freeway traffic, select at least a 250cc scooter which will have around a 75 mph top speed on level ground (slower with 2-up and on hills). Check your regional craigslist > for sale > motorcycles for used scooter values. If you can twist a wrench, a China “crate” scooter from an online vendor might be an option.

150cc scooters have around a 55-60 mph top speed on level ground (slower with 2-up and on hills).

Most full-bolt on new edge GT’s will put down around 250-255 RWHP on mustang dyno. Just FYI CAI intakes on these cars don’t do much, certainly not as effective as they are on the S197 cars.
