What happens when you consume expired laxatives?

People Reviews

I’m just curious…does anyone know the effects of consuming expired laxatives? Are they more potent?

They are less likely to work as well, however most medicines and i say MOST meaning most medicines still work after the expiration date. They are just not as powerful as once were. Like tylenol if you take it and its only expired for a few months still works just not as strong. you shouldn’t however take old antibiotics or anything like that because those medicines are intended to be used at that given time and you’re suppose to take all of them.

Actually it depends on how long these laxatives had been expired? usually drugs lose about 50% of there potency after 6 months of expiration if in tablet or capsule form and if it’s a liqiud medicine it will lose the potency within 3-4 months,no evidince of laxatives getting more potent when expired.

but it usually safer to avoide consumption of expired medicines in general as the required effective dose will be affected.

Laxatives Pills

I took a couple of laxatives tonight anD they were making me extremely nauseous and dizzy opposed to just cramping of the stomach which is usually what happens, so I looked at the expiration date and reales they expired over 8 years ago…so moral of the story is, don’t take any medication that is expired even a day, I feel it is safer. Hope that helps…

for the most part, medications will continue to work after they ‘expire’ but this totally depends how they were stored, and what class of medication it is. a laxative may lose potency, but won’t stop working. i would also be more careful with liquids, either solutions or suspensions. these may lose potency quicker than some enteric coated tablet. in conclusion, it will be fine to take, it just may not be as effective as a brand new product.

There are less chances that the laxatives will work if used after expiration date. They loose potency after the expiration date. Therefore, should not be used.

My question: Is a senna tablet ( the store brand) less effective only 2 months after expiration date? I m thinking that its probably still effective? I need results for temporary constipation from pain meds, and happened to try my Senna product, then noticed that the bottle expired 2mos ago (in Aug 2106).
Thanks

it depends on the drug and the expiration date. if it is not more than 6 months past the expiration
date, it should still work regardless of what it is. if it’s a stool softener such as docusate, it is effective well beyond the expiration date. next time, please be more specific.
