What does the phrase “Adds Character” mean?

What does the phrase “Adds character” mean if you say it for a person or whatever it is? I know it’s a simple question, but I just can’t answer it to myself. I’ve read some articles and in one of them I saw “it adds character” to a person.

Just as we describe people as having ” individuality, grit, uprightness, forthright behavior’ etc, we often the same phrase in writing (in articles, biographies, fiction, etc) to say “it ADDS character” to a person, –meaning that some of these attributes have lent themselves to be ‘added on’ to the personality of the person.

I hope I was able to explain that in simple language.

it broadens their personality, gives them experience, and maybe even teaches them a lesson or a skill… so the person is more complete and improved.

In this kind of use “character” means “individuality, distinctiveness.” I don’t think it’s likely to refer to the more usual uses of “character” related to honesty and moral uprightness.
