False modesty is avoiding promoting one’s interests, not because one honestly believes oneself unqualified, but because one isn’t supposed to “put oneself forward.”
To consign something “to the devil” is to reject it utterly.
The line is a rejection of the notion of deferring to others, for the sake of appearance, rather than pursuing one’s own desires openly.
