Not necessarily a true story, but everything that happens in the movie probably did happen some time and some place. Of course, now that the movie’s out, party-givers everywhere will be attempting to recreate the movie in their own parties, so in that sense, it is a “true” story.

@Liam, Is correct. The party is based on a party that occured in Australia. It became so out of contol it cost up to $20,000 in damage compared to millions in “Project X”. Its also based on movies with parties but with MORE favor to the audience.
