A bacterial RNA polymerase consists
of about 5 subunits which have a molecular weight of about ~400
kDa. This core enzyme associates with sigma subunit and forms RNA
polymerase holoenzyme. The sigma subunit is responsible only for
initiation of RNA synthesis. It is responsible for correct
identification of the promoter. Once the promoter is correctly
identified and RNA pol starts making longer transcripts, the sigma
subunit dissociates from the core enzyme. Thus, even without the
sigma subunit the RNA pol has polymerase activity.
