is American Flag capitalized?

Weird enough, my brother Josh’s band is named American Flag.

Anyway, both the A and the F get capitalized in that because it’s a proper noun. If you are just talking about the thing that has 13 stripes and 50 stars, though, then the A is capitalized because that’s proper, but the F is not because “flag” is a common noun. It’d be the same if you said “American man” or “American car” or “American football” or “American” in front of any common noun.

American is. Flag isn’t.

There is no need to capitalize “flag.”

“American” is always capitalized. “Flag” is capitalized if it is a proper noun, and not capitalized if it is a common noun.

i.e.,

– An abandoned American flag was found in front of a police station.
– The American Flag is a symbol of the USA.
