They made it that way for a reason. It is as powerful as it was designed to be. What you never saw The Christmas Story? You’ll shoot your eye out kid! Seriously the RR was designed as a child’s first gun low power and marginal accuracy. They make all manner of BB and pellet guns for different purposes. If you’ve outgrown your RR maybe it’s time to go to the next level but you might go back to your RR when you see the prices. I had a Winchester pellet gun that shot at 1000 fps and it hit target hard. The only problem was it was almost as loud as a 22LR so when I tried to shoot it in the backyard the neighbors called the cops thinking it was a real gun. That was fun explaining to the law but thankfully the policeman was understanding. Sometimes simpler is better and less is more.

Its not really feasible to do what you want. The Red Ryder is a springer/catapult gun. In order to increase its power you’d need to increase the strength of the springs. If you do that you’ll have to increase the strength of the rest of the gun’s components or firing the gun will damage the gun. Additionally the cost of the parts and labor for those alterations will be more than the gun is worth, or more than the cost of buying a more powerful gun.

Your best bet if you want a more powerful gun is to buy a more powerful gun. On a budget of less than $100 that could mean buying a pump pneumatic (Crosman 2100, Daisy 22SG, Crosman 664, Daisy 880, or Crosman 760), a co2 gun (Crosman 2260) or a spring-piston gun (Crosman Phantom/Storm/Quest). All of the guns I mentioned will have between 6 and 13 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, or between 4 and 9 times as much power as the Red Ryder.

Since it’s a spring propelled gun, you might be able to buy a more powerful spring at the hardware store,but I agree with the first poster who said to just get a more powerful gun. Almost everybody starts with a Red Ryder, just like most peoples’ first firearm is a .22, and as you grow and become more proficient, you get a more gun.
By the way, I was at Cabela’s the other day and they had pellet guns selling for $600. I’m 55 years old, but I still haven’t worked my way up to that yet.

I just bought my wife a little Red Ryder so I can show her to shoot accurately and consistently.

Also got myself one, for fun. =)

If you want a more powerful BB/Pellet gun, try a single shot, folding barrel type, they can be nice. I’ve got a Crossman that is accurate and lethal to small rodents, it’d easy kill a rabbit but I wouldn’t.

Coming from the perspective of a rather experienced machinist who has “been there done that”, I can say it is really a pointless experiment. The thing is, yes, you may be able to get/wind your own spring from thicker stock and get a stronger spring, but then you have to deal with the accuracy issues. The Red Ryder is good for what it is made for, 350 fps, and very, very, marginal accuracy. Might as well step up to something better.

Why not buy a BB gun that uses CO2 gas tubes, compressed CO2 carbon dioxide, has a much higher compression rate than just pumping regular air and springs, and it gives the BB or pellet more speed. Some of these CO2 airguns can shoot up to 1,100 feet per second.
