Different Preschool Teaching Methods & Techniques Used Worldwide

Looking for preschools for your little one? If you are feeling anxious because this is the first time your little champ will stay away from you, then you are not the only one.

We all want our children to start well since that will ensure a great base for their future education. Believe it or not, preschool education play an important role in building the educational pillar for a child.

You need to research the infrastructure, extracurriculars, and faculty of the preschool and the techniques used for introducing a child to the world of academics. These are some of the well-known teaching methods and techniques for preschoolers.

1. The Play Way Method

This is the most common preschool teaching method which has been adopted by every preschool teacher. Since children are new to the idea of academics, and their source of enjoyment is through playing, it is always helpful to mix the two.

Grooming and education are much more helpful to implement if the little champ is enjoying it. Plus, it will motivate them to come to school for everything, which many parents would agree is a nuisance.

Learning colors, numbers, and rhythmic repetition along with language comprehension is easier to teach through the play way method. However, when it comes to some advanced skills, they will use other methods.

2. The Bank Street Method

This is quite similar to the play way method, but the slight difference lies in the teaching curriculum. Many teachers would call this method appropriate for specially gifted children, as it can help build future scholars.

However, if a play school can mold the curriculum or activities based on the general IQ, along with some changes for children with a higher IQ, then this is your chance to do so.

Some of the activities will include solving simple to complicated puzzles, building block activities differing in difficulty levels, and making clay figurines. This method is used to study the logical as well as the creative mind of a child.

3. Language Immersion

Pre-schools do believe that it is easier for the little ones to grasp new languages better. This is probably because of the brain’s elasticity since the frontal lobe hasn’t formed fully yet. There is no proactive interference where learning of new tasks is constantly interrupted by old knowledge and memory.

The brain is more so a clean slate at that age, and it is easier to process new information. Therefore, some preschools will pay a lot of attention to building verbal and vocabulary skills.

Some might even go the extra mile to add a foreign language to the curriculum as well.

4. STEM Method

STEM is the shorter abbreviation of Science, Technology, Engineering,& Mathematics. This allows children to grow their cognitive skills. Although memory is also a part of your mental process, this focuses more on other skills like perfection, imagination, and problem-solving.

The daycare following this method will encourage the little champs to ask questions, enhance their imagination, find ways to experiment, be more curious, and, more importantly, make better observations.

This method for teaching young ones in preschool doesn’t encourage memorization without proper comprehension. They believe that problem-solving learning is much more effective than making the child memorize.

5. Outdoor Teaching Method

All work and no play make Jack/Jill a dull boy/girl.

This saying is taken pretty seriously when it is teaching preschoolers. Plus, simply keeping them occupied in academics can obstruct their cognitive skills. In order for them to form logical thinking and common sense and solve problems in terms of difficult situations can only come through outdoor activities.

When a preschool encourages children to spend more than an hour outside the classroom, nature becomes their classroom. Plus, there is no denying that science flourishes in nature, and children can learn more through using their senses than simply reading about it.

6. The Waldorf Method

The Waldorf method does take a more philosophical turn when it comes to learning. Preschools who have this method of teaching in their curriculum are more concerned with making the little champ into a better human being.

They strive to make independent children thinkers, and they preach about finding meaning in their life. Some might say that this is not academic enough for preschoolers. To which the answer might be:

Yes, it is less rigid when it comes to academics, but it certainly teaches children to find their passion early on and encourages working towards it.

7. Reggio Emilia Method

This philosophy of learning focuses more on understanding what the child needs. The teachers believe that children have ways to express themselves about their interests, and rather than imposing conventional teaching, it focuses more on building self-expression.

Some of the common activities that this play school mainly focuses on are:

  • Art therapy.
  • Sculpting.
  • Music, &
  • Focusing more on expressing your mental health.

It helps children build their perfection of the world through touch, feeling, and understanding. Being in the community and learning with everyone is encouraged because building good relationships is one of the most important subsections of this learning.

8. The Montessori Method

This is probably a little more academic than any other preschool teaching technique. This method believes preschoolers to have the mind of a sponge, and the most important information should sink in them between the age of 1-5.

Since this is the age when you do not forget anything, this age is perfect for making children interested in academics. Once that is ensured, parents do not have to force their children to sit with their homework.

Some of the methods include:

  • Long stretches of learning time.
  • Children who are different ages are seated in the same classroom. This is said to help induce curiosity and learn new things.
  • The classroom is not just one activity or one subject. In fact, children can pick and choose from a plethora of activities.

9. The High-Scope Method

This method is a modern method of preschool learning where the environment becomes the teacher. The teachers in the classroom do not have an authoritative or extremely disciplinary role. Rather they act as the child’s companion, trying to understand through their eyes.

Most of the learning happens through normal day-to-day conversation, and talking to others is encouraged. This method is very different from the conventional kind, where children are only expected to listen to the teacher while learning.

Curiosity is the mother of invention, and invention is not possible without experimentation. Through high-scope learning, students can learn through trial and error under the supervision of a teacher.

Why These Methods Are Important!

Here is why you should research your child’s play school before you enroll them in one.

  • First, you will have an in-depth knowledge of their curriculum and how it is helping your child’s growth.
  • Second, you will understand their methods and emulate the same at home to ensure you do not confuse the child.
  • Third, to find pre-schools that offer something more than simple education.

This is the beginning of your child’s education, and what preschool you choose will determine their pattern of study before the pressure of exams commences.
