Crenation
” Crenate” is a scalloped shape, as in the shape of a leaf.
“lyse” is to burst.

Crenation occurs when a human cell is exposed to a hypertonic solution. The water moves out of the cell and it shrivels up.
Lysis occurs when a human cell is exposed to a hypotonic solution. The water moves into the cell and is swells until bursting.
The reason the water moves out/in is due to the difference in the concentration gradient inside and outside of the cells.
