One day the truck shut off while driving. I checked it and the fuel pump wasn’t turning on. So I hit the bottom of the gas tank a few times, where the pump is located, and it turned on. It did it again so I replaced the fuel pump. Now I’m stuck on the side of the road with the same problem with the new pump. I have no idea where the relay is for the pump, and the FSCM and ECM-IGN fused are both fine. Please help. 5.3 liter engine.
The relay is near the fuse box, on the driver side of the engine compartment, however this is likely NOT that, more likely you have a loose wire connector on the top of the tank. However, I have heard bad reports on aftermarket fuel pumps, if you replaced it with a non-delco unit, you may need another one. Make sure you check the ground also, that vintage chevy has a lot of corrosion problems in the tank area, unfortunately there are no quick fixes on this, you just have to start with the simple and go on to the more complex.
2008 Chevy Silverado 1500
I have an 08 Silverado 5.3L ext. cab w/ 58K mileage. Last year truck wouldn’t start. I dropped the tank jumped out the fuel pump to make sure and then diagnosed a bad FSCM. I bought a new AC/Delco one from ebay for half the dealer price and installed it. Truck still would not start. I towed it to my local GM dealer and left it. Service manager called the next day and told me ‘I FIXED IT’, BUT they had to review all my work just to make sure and then had to reprogram the PCM so it would communicate with the new FSCM. That cost me $360.00. Okay, that was then. Last week the same thing happened. This time I went straight to the dealer who used GM computers to diagnose a dead short in fuel pump and quoted me $1000.00, YES $1000.00, to replace the pump. Once again I flat towed the beast home, dropped the tank, removed fuel pump module and jumped it out with a 12V battery charger. The thing runs like a scalded cat. I jumped it out over a dozen times without it failing. I put a test lead on the power and ground pins on the fuel pump plug and when I cycle the ignition switch I get power 3 and 4 times out of 5 tries. That 5th try though is no go and I get no power. I’m thinking the FSCM has gone bad again. One other weird thing though. When trying to actually start the beast occasionally when I release the key the engine will continue crank by itself for a few seconds. I thought maybe there might be a security system issue preventing the FSCM from closing the circuit to the fuel pump. If anyone has any ideas I’d sure appreciate hearing them because I know the fuel pump is good and I shudder to think what would have happened if I had spent $1000 and let the dealer replace it.
